Original Hand-Painted Art
Julia Hillman
NYC/Zurich contemporary woman artist.
History and present day questions inspire my imagination
which then are processed into a picture.
I grew up in Switzerland and Sweden and have lived most of my adult life in NYC. This has given me endless opportunities, as a self taught artist, to spend time in Museums and art galleries. While growing up in Zurich I attended a Rudolph Steiner schooI where art was a large part of the curriculum. In my early years I was part of an artist and fashion designer community and active in the women's liberation and equal rights movement. I have traveled and experienced different cultures in my desire for new perspectives in understanding.
My interest is exploring representation not filtered by a particular language of conventional techniques, my means of depiction is a matter of invention. The resulting work becomes a more direct expression of my imagination as it relates to reflections on current events, history, feminism and the environment.
The artworks begin with spontaneous gestures and proceed by way of defining and refining, in a sense “pulling forth” the image. The challenge is to not lose the energy and impulse – lose sight – of the original inspiration; and to translate that into a work that will engage the viewer.
